“An A- Whata?”

When watching the hit film Clueless, it’s easy to see that wardrobe stylist, Mona May did a remarkable job depicting life as a teenager in the 90’s through fashion. Cher, Dionne, and Tai were my role models because of their funky, daring, yet girly style. Only Paris designers were responsible for the vibrant patterns and colors that were seen throughout the movie, which made the pieces stand out for being inimitable. The clothes made each actor come to life and more believable to the audience. The men of Clueless rocked knit sweater vests, button- down denim shirts, crushed velvet, suspenders, berets, bucket hats, and don’t forget, this was a time when baggy was “in” which was a way of representing a rebellious personality. Alicia Silverstone, Stacy Dash and supporting actresses dressed to the nines on the set of Clueless. From the midriffs, feather boas, top hats, skirt suits, see-through cover- ups, platform sneakers, to the endless chokers, Scrunchies, baby doll dresses, argyle, animal, and plaid patterns, mini backpacks, knee highs, and “pleather” jackets and skirts show that the teens of this era realized the importance of trendsetting. Although very few of these items have actually come back in style, I still think this movie has a knowledgeable approach to the ins and outs of what looks good. Alicia Silverstone’s 56 costume changes throughout the movie paid off! Clueless is a film we’ll always remember simply because of its never ending fashion forward approach and way of changing people’s views on style so easily.
